Phytochemicals, three main ingredients: curcumin, resveratrol, and quercetin

hello .

In this lesson, we will look at the effects of phytochemicals and three representative phytochemical ingredients: resveratrol , curcumin , and quercetin .

1) Phytochemicals

First, I would like to briefly explain the terms phytochemicals , polyphenols , and flavonoids .

Phytochemical?

This is a compound word of ' phyto', meaning plant-based, and ' chemical', meaning chemical, and it is an expression that covers all plant-based chemicals that have physiological activity that is beneficial to health . When phytochemicals are consumed, they activate antioxidants in the body and suppress cell damage, helping to maintain health .

Polyphenol ?

It is a phenolic compound found in plants and is an antioxidant that converts active oxygen in our body into harmless substances .

Flavonoids and nonflavonoids ?

Flavonoids are substances that exist on the surface of plant fruits , the surface of the mouth , flowers, etc., and are involved in protecting plants from ultraviolet rays or in the color and pest resistance of plants .

Nonflavonoids are widely distributed components in plants , but are used to refer to all substances that do not fall under the category of flavonoids .

Because it is difficult to understand the detailed chemical structure of plants ,

Rather than memorizing each one separately ,

It has the categories of phytochemicals ⊃ polyphenols ⊃ flavonoids / nonflavonoids,

It can be understood as a physiologically active substance that helps the body's antioxidant function when consumed.

2) Three representative polyphenol phytochemical ingredients

(1) Curcumin

Curcumin is a component extracted from the root of turmeric, and it began to attract attention in 2009 when it was published in the world-renowned scientific journal Cell .

Its main benefit is the prevention of most inflammatory diseases such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, tumors, dementia, and chronic diseases.

In particular , curcumin is characterized by inhibiting various inflammatory factors in the body, such as NF-kB, COX2, LOX interleukin-1 6 , etc.

However , since the absorption rate and bioavailability are low , you should check whether a special method to increase the absorption rate ( e.g. , SLCP tm ) has been used .

(2) Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a component found in grapes , wine , and berries, and began to receive attention in Korea as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory component through a book titled The End of Aging written by a Harvard aging research doctor .

Its main benefits include preventing heart disease, cholesterol, cancer, and dementia, and activating sirtuin, a longevity gene.

However , since the absorption rate and bioavailability are low , it should be checked as it works effectively in the body when the molecular structure is ' trans ' rather than 'cis' .

(3) Quercetin

Quercetin is a component typically found in onions and apples , and is known as a natural anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory nutrient .

The main effects include improving asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopy, high blood pressure, Parkinson's disease, dementia, and depression.

Additionally, there is heavy metal excretion in the body . Quercetin is composed of five hydroxyl groups , and these hydroxyl groups are known to play a key role in chelating heavy metals such as cadmium, lowering their bioactivity and detoxifying them .

In particular , quercetin dihydrate is the most absorbable form of quercetin , so you should check that .
