Is NMN effective for improving muscle strength?
hello .
This time, we will look at NMN and muscle strength improvement .
-
NMN
NMN (Nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a precursor of NAD+ that is essential for cellular energy activation, DNA repair, and immune improvement, although it is difficult to obtain sufficient amounts through food as it is found in very small amounts in peas, broccoli, and meat.
Preclinical studies have shown that NMN, when taken orally, is converted to NAD+ in the body and can improve various symptoms that may occur due to aging.-

In this study, we randomly assigned a placebo group to a NMN group to investigate the effect of oral NMN intake on muscle strength improvement . Forty- two Japanese male volunteers, with an average age of 65 years or older, took either a placebo (n=21) or 250 mg of NMN (n=21) for 12 weeks .
The first thing to look at in this study is whether there are any side effects .
Comparison of blood chemical indices between the placebo group and the NMN intake group showed no significant difference between the two groups , and no significant side effects were observed.

However, unlike the placebo group , the 250 mg NMN group more than doubled their blood NAD+ levels . These researchers compared walking speed and grip strength to determine whether the increased NAD+ levels actually contributed to muscle strength gains .

Comparison of average walking speed showed that the NMN 250 mg group had faster average walking speed than the placebo group at weeks 6 and 12.

As a result of comparing left hand grip strength , the NMN 250 mg group showed stronger left hand grip strength at weeks 6 and 12 compared to the placebo group.
Although the study has limitations in that there was no significant change in right-hand grip strength , the researchers speculate that since 90% of the Japanese population is right-handed, the effects of NMN supplementation may be more pronounced in the left hand, which is less affected by daily exercise and movement .
In particular, the activities measured in this study, such as walking and picking up objects, are essential for daily life . Therefore, if the muscle strength required for these activities declines due to aging, it can reduce the quality of life .
Based on this paper , it is suggested that oral intake of NMN may be one way to strengthen muscles and endurance that have weakened with age.
