This time, we will introduce the latest paper regarding the reduction of side effects of NMN cancer treatment .

  • NMN

NMN (Nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a precursor to NAD+ and is converted into NAD+ when ingested in the body . NAD+ is one of the substances that helps maintain healthy youth in our body . David A. In this paper, Rashid and researchers at the Mayo Clinic present evidence suggesting that NMN may prevent chemobrain by restoring mitochondrial function . In human neurons, Rashid and researchers showed that NMN alleviates cellular defects, such as mitochondrial DNA damage caused by cisplatin .


Our bodies are made up of various cells . Among them, mitochondria, which play a crucial role in cellular function, cause DNA damage and increase the production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS) when combined with cisplatin . In particular, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species cause cell damage ( oxidative stress ) , so the higher the level, the more negative the effects on the body .

To prove this, Rashid and his colleagues took stem cells from a 16 -year-old male, chemically modified them into cortical neurons, and compared them . In the graph below, Saline was treated with saline , then exposed to cisplatin for 24 hours , while NMN was pretreated for 30 minutes and then exposed to cisplatin for 24 hours .

After NMN pretreatment , the reduction in side effects due to cisplatin can be confirmed by comparing the levels of cisplatin (CIS) in the 𝛾-H2AX index, which indicates DNA damage, and ( cisplatin )CIS in the reactive oxygen species (mROS) index .

When pretreated with NMN for 30 minutes , cisplatin (CIS) levels were significantly lower in the 𝛾-H2AX index on the left and the reactive oxygen species (mROS) index on the right .

Additionally, we demonstrated that NMN mitigates cellular defects such as cisplatin-induced mitochondrial DNA damage by swelling, a structural feature that can be used to measure mitochondrial neuronal damage .

Rashid and his colleagues measured mitochondrial swelling by assessing the size of mitochondria using a powerful ( transmission electron ) microscope . The larger the area of ​​cisplatons , the greater the mitochondrial neuronal damage .

Analyzing the graph above , we can see that neurons treated with cisplatin (CIS) and saline ( orange ) have larger mitochondrial areas . However, neurons treated with NMN ( blue ) have smaller mitochondrial areas .

Based on the findings in these papers, our results suggest that NMN may potentially help prevent brain aging and neurodegeneration, particularly in response to chemotherapy such as cisplatin .

Additionally, NMN has been shown to prevent heart damage in response to doxorubicin, a chemotherapy for cancers such as leukemia , and to prevent intestinal wall damage in response to radiation therapy, which is commonly used to treat abdominal and pelvic tumors in older adults .

Therefore, with further research, we may see more evidence showing that NMN may help prevent side effects of various cancer treatments .

As NMN has shown various positive effects throughout the body in preclinical studies, we will continue to introduce the latest papers on the efficacy of NMN .
