FDA officially recognizes it as a dietary supplement

NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) , which is considered a key ingredient in aging research, has been receiving attention worldwide as a symbol of ' reverse aging' since Professor David A. Sinclair of Harvard Medical School introduced it in his book 'The End of Aging ' . 

But over the past three years, NMN has gone beyond being a simple anti-aging agent and has been at the center of fierce legal and policy debate among the U.S. FDA , industry , and consumers . 

And finally, on September 29 , 2025 , the FDA reversed its previous position and officially recognized NMN as a legitimate dietary supplement .

Below is a summary of the controversy that continued from 2022 to 2025 and the final decision :

① November 2022 : FDA announces that it will not classify NMN as a dietary supplement.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) announced that it was removing NMN from its dietary supplement classification . The reason for this was not safety concerns , but rather the history of an investigational new drug (IND) plan to develop NMN as a new drug .

Immediately after this announcement, sales of NMN products were halted on major distribution platforms such as Amazon .

② March 2023 : NMN industry rebuttal , citizen petition, and lawsuit

The Natural Products Association (NPA) and the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) strongly opposed the FDA 's decision and filed a citizen petition . They then filed a lawsuit against the FDA , arguing that NMN 's dietary supplement status must be preserved .

③ October 2024 : Court orders FDA to temporarily halt further sanctions or enforcement actions against NMN .

The federal court ruled that the FDA's action lacked procedural justification and issued a preliminary injunction preventing the FDA from restricting the sale of NMN while the lawsuit is pending .

④ July 2025 : FDA delays official response

The FDA was supposed to respond to the citizen petition by July 28 , 2025 , but failed to respond and requested a delay until September 30. Under the preliminary injunction , NMN products continued to be sold .

⑤ September 29 , 2025 : FDA officially approves NMN supplements.

Finally, on September 29 , 2025 , the FDA announced that it recognized NMN as a legitimate dietary supplement ingredient .

The FDA acknowledged that NMN has been sold as a supplement since 2017 , and retracted its previous position that it was “ excluded because of its history of development as a new drug . ”

This was the result of three years of industry pushback , citizen petitions , lawsuits , and consumer advocacy .

Dr. Daniel Fabricant, CEO of NPA , said :

“ Today’s FDA decision confirms that NMN is legal as a supplement , and we now urge e-commerce platforms across the United States to immediately bring NMN products back to the market .”

“ We will continue to pressure Congress , the courts , and the administration until the FDA completely stops abusing the drug exclusion clause .”

With the FDA 's final change in position on NMN , the controversy surrounding NMN has ended and its position in the health functional food market has been firmly established .

This decision is expected to go beyond simply recognizing NMN as a health functional food and serve as an important precedent for protecting the rights of the industry and consumers .
