All About Quercetin: Who Should Take It, Why, and How?

hello.

In this lesson, we'll look at the basics of quercetin, why it's recommended for women, and why you should check if your quercetin is "dehydrated."

  • Quercetin ( quercetin )

Quercetin is a phytochemical widely distributed in onions , asparagus , cranberries , apples , kale , spinach, etc., and is especially abundant in onion skins . Quercetin is a representative antioxidant known as a substance that converts active oxygen in our body into harmless .

Onions, a representative source of quercetin, contain a higher quercetin content in the onion skin than in the flesh, making it difficult to consume in cooked form . Therefore, one effective way to consume quercetin is to thoroughly wash the onion skin, boil it, and drink it as tea . However, because the outer skin is often discarded when preparing onions, quercetin is often taken as a supplement .

Why should we take quercetin ?

There are five major known effects of quercetin .

1) Antioxidant action:

Quercetin is a type of phytochemical whose polyphenol component eliminates active oxygen in the body .

A certain amount of active oxygen plays a role in removing bacteria and viruses from our body , but excessive active oxygen generated due to aging can actually harm the body, so antioxidant action is essential .

    2) Anti-inflammatory action:

When active oxygen increases , normal cells become inflamed , and this inflammation creates a vicious cycle in which more active oxygen is created .

Therefore, antioxidant action can lead to anti-inflammatory action because it reduces reactive oxygen species and reduces the activity of the inflammatory gene NFkB in normal cells.

      3) Cancer suppression and prevention:

According to the American Medical Association (AMA) , quercetin is said to prevent damaged cells, such as cancer cells, from multiplying. The main principle is that it blocks the supply of nutrients and oxygen to cancer cells, thereby preventing cancer growth.

      4) Prevention of heart disease and cardiovascular diseases:

A 4- week experiment on the efficacy of onions conducted by the Seoul National University Graduate School of Public Health on 30 hyperlipidemia patients showed a decrease in cholesterol and triglycerides . This indirectly demonstrates the heart disease-preventing effect of quercetin in onions , given that cholesterol and triglycerides are major risk factors for heart disease .

      5) Prevention of allergic diseases:

It helps relieve allergy symptoms , prevents histamine from being released from cells, and helps treat bronchitis and various allergic diseases .

However , quercetin has a characteristic in that its absorption rate in the body varies depending on its form .

Therefore , when consuming quercetin, it is important to consume it in a form that can increase absorption and bioavailability rather than consuming high amounts of the raw material itself .

Lastly, quercetin has no reported specific side effects , but side effects such as mild headaches have been reported when high doses are taken for a long period of time .

      • Why Quercetin is Recommended for Women

Quercetin is a good nutrient for both men and women , but let me tell you why quercetin is especially recommended for women .

The antioxidant , anti-inflammatory , and cardiovascular disease prevention properties mentioned above also showed significant results in ovarian health .

A 2018 study by Masoud Khorshidi found that quercetin intake may help alleviate polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

The study involved women (n=78) who took 1,000 mg/day of quercetin or a placebo for 12 weeks . Unlike the placebo , those taking quercetin had a significant decrease in testosterone levels .
Although the specific cause of polycystic ovary syndrome has not been identified , it is often caused by hormonal abnormalities in the hypothalamus , pituitary gland , and ovaries, which increase the secretion of the male hormone testosterone in the ovaries , resulting in poor ovulation .

Therefore, since testosterone levels are one indicator of polycystic ovary syndrome, this may be one piece of evidence that quercetin may support ovarian health .

      • Why You Should Check if Your Quercetin Is Dehydrated

Which quercetin should we take to have higher absorption and bioavailability ?

      It is quercetin dehydrate .

Based on the literature, quercetin dihydrate has the highest absorption rate among quercetins .

Therefore, when taking quercetin , we recommend that you check the label to see if it is dehydrated before purchasing .
