  • NMN

NMN (Nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a precursor of NAD+ and is converted into NAD+ when ingested in the body .
NAD+
is one of the substances that helps maintain healthy youth in our bodies . David A. Sinclair , a pioneer in aging research at Harvard University, mentioned this in his book The End of Aging ,” and it began to receive attention as a representative anti-aging substance in Korea as well .

Nowadays, people pursue maintaining a healthy life rather than simply living a long life . However, people generally reach a point where their aging protein levels rapidly increase around the ages of 34 , 60 , and 78 , so they want to effectively improve the symptoms of aging that can occur as they age through intermittent fasting , regular exercise , and NMN intake .

As papers on the efficacy of NMN, which is converted into NAD+ in the body, continue to be published, I would like to introduce papers related to eye health among them .

  • NMN and Eye Health

Before we go on, let’s briefly explain about the eyes ,” an organ of our body .

The eyes have tarsal glands inside the eyelids , which secrete oil appropriately to keep the eyes moist . As the eyes age, the size of the tarsal glands decreases , and the function of the oil-secreting glands decreases, resulting in dry eye and ocular dysfunction .

Researchers at Kyoto University, publishing in Nature Aging, have begun preclinical studies to improve the secretion of oil that coats the eyes from the palpebral glands .

Research has shown that eye drops containing 100 μM concentrations of NAD+ precursors such as NMN and NR increase the size of the palpebral glands , improving oil secretion function and alleviating dry eye .

To support these findings, we conducted two additional studies.

(Sasaki et al., 2022 | Nature Aging )

In the first study, to measure the degree of eye decline with age, Doi and colleagues at Kyoto University examined human eyelid specimens from men and women aged 29–35 and 61–70 years .

A Japanese research team measured the area of the tarsal glands in the upper and lower eyelids and found that the size of the tarsal glands in the upper eyelids decreased by about 30% in older men and women . Similarly, the size of the tarsal glands in the lower eyelids decreased by about 20% .

(Sasaki et al., 2022 | Nature Aging )

Additionally , when we examined 3β-HSD activity according to tarsal gland size in 12-month-old and 24 -month-old mice , we found that 3β-HSD activity decreased with age .

Taken together, these two findings suggest that age-related decline in ocular function is associated with decreased 3β-HSD activity in addition to decreased function of the tarsal glands .

In a second study, Doi and colleagues conducted additional research to find out how to increase the activity of 3β-HSD.

As a result, the use of the NAD+ synthesis inhibitor FK866 reduced the size of the tarsal glands in mice and reduced the activity of the steroidogenic enzyme 3β-HSD by approximately 80%.

However, treatment of mice with reduced tarsal gland size with NMN or NR resulted in increased 3β-HSD activity and recovery.

In particular, for NMN, NMN exhibited a greater effect than NR, enhancing 3β-HSD by 10% over baseline activity levels.

As such, NMN has shown various positive effects throughout the body in preclinical areas.

We will continue to introduce the latest papers on the efficacy of NMN .
