Curcumin and Oral Health
I will inform you about the oral health benefits of curcumin based on research papers .
The study aimed to determine the therapeutic effect of curcumin on oral submucous fibrosis , randomly assigning patients to receive either a placebo ( ointment containing 0.05% clobetasol propionate, a type of steroid ointment ) or curcumin Longvida® lozenges ( lozenges that dissolve in the mouth ) .
The study subjects were 30 patients with oral submucous fibrosis aged 18 to 50 years who received either placebo (n=15) or 2 g lozenges containing 400 mg of curcumin Longvida® (n=15) for 3 months .
After looking at the four major words for the latest paper , let's take a closer look .
First , there is oral submucous fibrosis .
Oral Submucous Fibrosis ( OSF ) is a disease in which the oral mucosa becomes chronically eroded and hardens, making it difficult to open the mouth . Therefore, the effectiveness of treatment can be determined based on the degree to which the mouth can be opened . In addition, a burning sensation is felt when eating spicy food .
Second , the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) is a pain scale that evaluates the intensity of subjective pain. It is called VAS . The left side of the line is recorded as 'no pain' , and the right side is recorded as 'unbearable pain' , and the patient indicates the level of pain .
Third , there is a control group and an experimental group .
Control group refers to a placebo group in the field of medicine .
Test group refers to the group that receives the treatment to be tested, rather than the placebo group .
Based on the above information, let's take a look at the research . The first thing we will look at in the study is mouth size .
The curcumin Longvida group had an increase of 5.93 (±2.37) mm in mouth opening compared to the placebo group . As mentioned above , the biggest problem for patients with OSF is the inability to open their mouth as the disease progresses , and curcumin showed effective improvement in this regard .
The next thing to look at is the decrease in the average change value of VAS between regular food and spicy food .

In the graph above, you can see that when consuming spicy food , the level of pain felt by the blue curcumin group was significantly reduced compared to the green placebo group .
Therefore , this paper suggests that curcumin Longvida® 400mg is effective in enhancing the therapeutic effect of oral mucosal fibrosis .
