When is the best time of day to take nutritional supplements?

According to new research recently published by researchers at the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Waterloo in Canada, taking nutritional supplements at the right time of day combined with a healthy lifestyle can delay the disease called 'aging'.

The most effective time to take anti-aging supplements varies by age.

First, the research team first announced in 2015 in the journal iScience that "aging should now be classified as a disease." Co-researchers Dr. Sadria and Anita Layton are professors at the University of Waterloo, where they research applied mathematics, computer science, pharmacology, and biology.

Since the publication of the above paper, many researchers, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and Harvard University Professor David Sinclair, author of “The End of Aging” published in 2019, have supported it, and research on anti-aging is actively being conducted.

In March 2021, Dr. Sadria and Dr. Anita Layton published a new study in Cell Press, using mathematical modeling. Their paper suggests that there may be a timeframe for taking anti-aging supplements, depending on your age.

According to the paper, a groundbreaking experiment was conducted to determine the 'liver circadian rhythm' of mice by administering NAD+ supplement (NR) to young and aging mice at different times and observing changes in the levels of NAD+ and SIRT1 (an anti-aging protein in the body) in the liver.

The researchers argued that NMN and resveratrol, two of the most studied and popular NAD+ supplements currently in the spotlight, would produce more effective results than NR, the NAD+ supplement used in the study.

Additionally, the researchers said that when applying the above research results to humans, young people would see the highest effectiveness if they took NMN 6 hours after waking up.

However, when it comes to consuming resveratrol, it was suggested that it was most effective for young people to consume it in the evening, and for middle-aged and older people to consume it around noon.

As research has confirmed, to prevent changes in our biological rhythm and aging, we need to consume not only nutritional supplements but also food at the right time for each age group.
